EduGeek

I got recommend to EduGeek a while ago from a bloke at work (no that guy who lives on the nauty step who only appears when you say those dread words). Ok, it’s full ok useful stuff, other ICT Technician who, are actually on the ball 99.9% of the time (I figure that gives everyone christmas day off). Ok, it’s not as good as say, speaking direct to Capita, Microsoft, Redhat or whoever, but, it is a friendly community.

Anyway, my rant. I found a post about how they moaned about FastHost going down, which I find funny, why attack the hand that feeds you? Surely you should be helping them? Anyway, just tracert the domain, interesting, they appear to have a dedi server with them… why? Surely it’s just a basic forum with a lot of users? I would of got a good web hosting package, or a VDS with clustered. I suppose you could, if you want to be fancy, get a load of cheap VPS servers, then have a MySQL cluster and then load balance through round-robin HTTP, I would use Lighttpd for stuff like images, use BIND or such with GeoIP to make sure people get only local servers. Failing that, get a dedi with Rapidswitch or Netrino,  both are on a much better network! Personally I would get an Dell R200 then colo with Netrino. You could even do a deal with Mythic Beasts get a nice Apple “server”, I think there were even doing a load-balanced deal too!!

Still, be interesting to hear how much they rake in, they don’t ask for donates, but they do seem to have every ad under the sun. The new images on the first post is annoying to say the least, makes it 100x slower to load. Still some good google work can help there… ripping the bit I want. Hahaha Mr Ad.
